GO Home

I really love this little house. If I were going to build a new home for my family it would be something like this. This company up in Maine is really onto something (www.gologic.us). Not only are they building homes to the Passive House standard, but they are doing it for a square foot cost comparable to standard new construction homes. If you don’t know what Passive House is, it is a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency and reducing the ecological footprint of a building. It results in ultra-low energy buildings that require little energy for space heating or cooling. Often Passive House buildings are net zero homes, or homes that produce as much energy as they consume. Some Passive homes look too boxy and modern for my taste. I really like that it looks like an updated version of a classic farmhouse. It would fit in with the vernacular architecture of any rural area in the northeast.

gohomeintpicIt is 1500 square feet with three bedrooms and 1 ½ bathrooms. That means the parents are sharing a bathroom with the kids (horror). Also the bedrooms are pretty compact, but this gets to the point of energy efficient homes. The greatest efficiencies are gained by not building square footage that isn’t used. It makes no sense to build a 3500 square foot house for a family of four even if that house is a Passive House. Plus once you have kids all of your privacy goes out the window anyway. I don’t know about other kids, but when it comes to mine, they own all of the bathrooms. Even the one attached to my bedroom. My oldest daughter has made it a habit to do her morning necessaries in our bathroom. When I asked her why she is using my bathroom at 5:45 AM she said “because it is closer”. Oh my mistake. So in our case the extra bathroom just means an extra shower, toilet and sink to clean.

I love our old farmhouse but sometimes when I look around at all of my unfinished projects or when we get a whopper of a gas bill I think to myself it would be nice to live in a new house. If there comes a day when I can’t get that thought out of my head I think I will build myself a Passive House GO house.
